Bia Watches

Identity, Naming, Logo, Brand Assets, Creative Direction

Creating the Identity for this give-back brand was inspirational from the very beginning - women helping women was the mission, and empowerment through charity was the goal. It had to start with a strong name. In Greek myth, Bia was the sister of Nike; the female embodiment of power and strength. That’s what this brand is all about! The logo and icon were based on the universal stance of encouragement and victory. (As it turns out, our arms are very expressive!) The watches' glowing dials inspired its bright palette, and gave direction to much of the print & digital ads and social media content.

The Inclusive Leadership Institute

Logo, Creative Direction, Site Design

Transformative. That was one of the words the ILI team came up with during our initial discovery session to describe the heart of The Inclusive Leadership Institute’s work.

My role was to create a logo and website for their upcoming launch that would evoke a transformative experience, ideally giving the viewer different perspectives to explore. I'd also provide creative direction for the future evolution of ILI.

For the LOGO, my mind immediately went to Escher’s work – a singular image with varying views was the goal. The challenging perspective this mark allows for a dynamic experience within a static environment, encouraging the viewer to look deeper. Beyond identifying ILI, the logo is designed to be flexible in its usage.

Our super-wide PALETTE embraces diversity, and also fills the team's toolbox with tons of options for accessibility.

The WEBSITE was meant to change and evolve as ILI's scope grew and its community developed. The first iteration concentrated on transformation, while today's version – created by the ILI team – has a more solid stance. Guidelines and Creative Direction continue to influence the team's visual communication choices, introducing new ideas while maintaining the original intent for an open, friendly, inclusive, supportive, and diverse community. (Not a coincidence that those are exactly the words I'd use to describe the folks I worked with at ILI. They really practice what they teach!)

refresh

This brand refresh for Bergen County Camera used an updated palette and consistent typography to stay current while maintaining recognition.

Would a little art direction pull your current brand assets together?

Szanto Watches

Identity, Logo, Brand Assets, Creative Direction

Did you know that wristwatches were developed because of WW1? I didn’t!

I was responsible for virtually every visual element of Szanto’s vintage watch brand from day one. Research was key to developing their identity, designing and producing all their assets, and maintaining it throughout a 10 year span.

Though I’d been working within the watch industry for years, I hadn’t known a lot about the history of timepieces. It was important to me to stay true to the eras that each watch line depicted, from authentic imagery, to font choices, to writing style. (Yup, I also did most of the copywriting, and some set photography.)

At the outset, there was an obvious problem that needed to be solved — nobody knew how to pronounce Szanto! The solution?
“Szanto is an old family name — the Z has been silent for generations — an apt moniker for the century-old design inspiration, and an homage to the those who were first afforded the luxury of checking time with a mere flick of the wrist.”
Their backstory proved to be an invaluable tool to add clarity through narrative, and the “Silent Z Guy” offered the viewer a visual reminder.

Visual communication can take many forms, from a simple printed business card to a giant digital billboard.
A clear message will work in any medium!

TriRadial's logo proved to be a really flexibile tool for animations and infographics.

Here's what happens when a photographer gets his hands on some fresh barley & hops. This sign rounded out his decor, and was great fun to create.

420 Waldos Watch Dial design. Was it luck or kismet that put 4 o'clock and 20 minutes at the exact same place on the dial? The leaf marks the 4:20 spot ;)

Loved creating the design for this book cover! Using artwork in the public domain allowed for rich expression of the subject without breaking the budget or timeline.

It's always exciting to create large format displays, and even better when you get to see them in person!
